Last Day of Hungarian Classes

Szia from Ansley, Grace, Liv, and Qian

Today, our day started off with rescuing Qian after she got stuck in the hotel’s emergency exit. Then we went on with our usual commute to class. It was quite an adventure with poor Qian having the doors of the bus close before she was able to get on. Don’t worry, she just had to do wait at the bus stop (pictured below) for 30 seconds to catch the next bus… the day didn’t start off very well for Qian… “It’s just my Budapest life.” -Qian

It was our last day of Hungarian lessons, so we played connect the dots with Hungarian letters (harder than it sounds) and played a game where one person looked for a chocolate in the room while the rest of us guided them by saying “meleg” (warm) when they got close and “hideg” (cold) when they moved further away from it. We got Erika flowers and a card as a thank you for being patient with our struggle through beginning to learn Hungarian.

After class, we went to a place students that previously went on the trip recommended, called Gelato Rosa. It was interesting to see how they made the flowers using little scopes of gelato. Not only were they pretty to look at (I mean look at the picture), the gelato was also REALLY good, 10/10 would recommend.

After walking back to the hotel with gelato in 0ºC weather, a group of 12 of us went to do some group bonding activities that were led by a local Hungarian theater student. We met up with Barna and Sári, our Hungarian friends, since they volunteered to do the activities with us. The workshop began with a relaxing guided meditation. Then, we started a bunch of activities that were all done in silence, with the instructor using hand signals to indicate what he wanted us to do. The games involved a lot of non-verbal communication and trust. One game involved everyone picking up a student (Liv) and holding them horizontally above their heads, and another game involved being led blindly around the room by a partner.

Half of our room (Ansley and Grace) decided to make omelets for dinner, and discovered it’s pretty hard to do when you don’t have a spatula. Despite the difficulty, they ended up with some not-half-bad scrambled eggs “would do again, maybe.”  Qian is now a pro at using a Hungarian food ordering app, although she isn’t quite sure what she is eating, she does know the word “beef.” Liv went to another one of the professor dinners mentioned in the previous blog post.

So far the trip is going super well though! Only one loss bus pass (not in our room…), but no loss passports!
