Today was a great day because we didn't have to go to class (yay!)
We had to start the day a little earlier (like meet in lobby at 8 instead of 9:30 ish). Then we went to the Keleti train station so we could take a 2 hour train ride to a beautiful town called Eger. Our first stop was the university, where we had to walk through a tiny little gate.
We went to see this beautiful building that had an observatory on the ninth floor (yeah there were a lot of stairs we had to climb, but at least we got our steps in for the day). Before we went into the observatory, we got some fun physics demonstrations by university students. Here's Jessye with the classic Newton's Cradle
We finished around 12:30 and had to wait til 1 to actually see the observatory, so in the meantime we were able to go out on the terrace on the eighth floor, and we saw some incredible views of Eger.

The observatory itself was so cool, because instead of a traditional telescope, where the observer looks through a lens, the image was projected on a white table and the finder was controlled by long poles connected to the telescope. The following image is hard to see, but it's a projection of a part of the city.
When we were finished at the observatory, we had some time to walk around before lunch, so we went to the Basilica across from the university. After the Basilica, we finally got lunch (at 2 p.m. after eating breakfast at like 7:45), and boy was everyone hungry. Appetizers consisted of tartars and gulyash, while the meals were bratwurst, burgers, chicken, pork, or salad. Then dessert was also so delicious everyone was sharing their cheese plates, cheesecake, or pancakes (crepes).
After lunch we all ventured to the castle, and had our Hungarian friends/tour guides give us a mini history lesson. Here's a view from the top (like St.Olaf it's on a hill)!
The sun was setting as we left, and the views were absolutely stunning.
Then we had a 3 mile walk to the last event of the day: Wine tasting! (not compulsory)
We walked to a small village that had many small wineries, and tried 6 different wines. There was also a traditional snack tray on the table that consisted of bread with lard, onions and paprika (the lard is supposed to help everything 'glide' down your throat). Here's what it looked like.

Luckily, we took a bus back to the train station, then got on the 2 hour train ride back to Budapest. As you can tell, everyone was quite knackered.
Now we're back in our room, and getting ready for bed because we need to get ready to grind tomorrow and study for our midterm on Friday.
